How to Cook Bacon in the Oven

If you need to cook bacon for more than 1 or 2 people, then you need to know how to cook bacon in the oven.  I cook bacon in the oven even when its just for me.  I make extra bacon so that way, if want bacon for a salad, sandwich or pizza topping, its ready when I need it. Making bacon in the oven is 95% hands off so its a great technique to use when cooking for a larger than normal group.  Its less messy to cook bacon in the oven and you have less grease splatter to clean up.  While your bacon is cooking, whip up some waffles or pancakes and everything will be ready at about the same time.  It's how we cook bacon in restaurants all the time and I'm happy to share the technique with you.

When you are making bacon in the to oven there are three key points you need to remember:

  • Its ok if the slices touch, but make sure they don't overlap because the bacon won't crisp up properly.
  • If  your ovens heat is uneven, you will need to rotate the pan halfway through so you don't end up with burned bacon on one side and raw bacon on the other :)
  • The cook time will vary depending on the thickness of your bacon.  Thick cut bacon can take 20 minutes to crisp enough to your liking, maybe even longer.  Just turn on your oven light and take a peek towards the end of the cook time.

Recipes for making bacon in the oven are not new.  I found these instructions in the Boston Cooking School Cookbook circa 1918.

Bacon

They have some pretty standard ideas for using the bacon drippings, but you can even use the bacon fat to make cookies.  You can find the recipe for the Bacon Fat Spice Cookies in this book.

Bacon, thick cut

Preheat the over to 375° F.

Place the strips of bacon on a rimmed sheet pan.  It's ok if the bacon touches because it will eventually shrink up quite a bit.  Just make sure the bacon strips don't overlap.

Place the sheet pan of bacon in the oven until it is browned to your liking and crispy.  My bacon took 20 minutes because I used thick cut, your bacon may take less time if is thinner.  Just make sure you check the bacon after 10 minutes and don't walk away from it because it can go from perfection to burnt in a matter of seconds.

Remove the bacon from the oven and transfer to paper towel lined plate.  Dispose of the excess oil the way I outlined in the video if you don't intend to use it for some other purpose.
